I wasn't expecting much, thanks to how primitive most Gameboy games are nowadays, but this just might be one of the best Mario games I've played in a while, as the amount of quality, especially compared to this games predecessor, is staggering, and the fact this game isn't as talked about as much as the other classics does kind of suck, because this is an absolute essential for those who have any handheld that this can played on, especially if they're fans of the Italian plumber, as this is a fantastic Mario game that seems too good to be on a handheld. Overall, this is one of the most shocking games I think I've ever played. In other words, this has a fantastic presentation. The music is some of the most catchy and memorable stuff from any Gameboy game ever, and the visuals are shockingly well detailed, as the sprites not only look more alive, but also look like they're from an adorable version of SMW, making this one of the best looking Gameboy games out there.
The powerups are all awesome, as they are some of the funnest and most unique in a Mario game up to this point, and the fact that these haven't made a return in newer games is pretty baffling, as they really work. The world map, while not usually a big deal in Mario games, is almost as expansive as the one in SMW, which is fantastic. The gameplay is fluid and controls just like you would expect it too. The level design is very creative and well designed, as are the bosses. This is, without a doubt, one of the most criminally underrated Mario games out there, since it has about, if not just as much quality as other masterpieces like SMB3 or SMW. But, Nintendo somehow took that games formula, mixed in a little bit of SMW, and managed to fit it all on the Gameboy.
